Salazar Elementary School | Santa Fe, New Mexico
This new 63,500 square foot elementary school for 415 students in grades K-5 replaces an aging 40-year-old school in an established neighborhood. The design is a contemporary interpretation of the traditional Santa Fe style of architecture, blending and harmonizing with the surrounding community.
Children’s safety and security was a design priority. Thirty-six classrooms are arranged in two wings, a configuration which provides an enclosed, centralized playground within,
protected from busy perimeter traffic and inclement weather. The “core facilities” — cafeteria/kitchen, administrative offices, multi-purpose gym, and media center/library — have been configured to allow for exterior access and use by the Salazar community, while the rest of the facility is gated off and secure.
