Taylor Middle School Phase 1A Addition | Albuquerque, New Mexico

A 37,600 SF new campus core replacement at Albuquerque Public School’s Taylor Middle School has been designed to provide a more prominent front entry to the campus. Visitors enter via a secure vestibule that directs them immediately to the reception desk before being allowed to access other portions of the school. The new addition will house the school’s administration, nurse & counsellor suites, teacher’s lounge & workroom, a new media center with a maker space for hands-on projects, and new art and music facilities. The building’s two-story design creates a smaller footprint and improves security by reducing the number of ingress points. The new design has incorporated Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design principles to help secure the campus by using natural sight lines, strategic fencing, and a clear point of access to the main entrance.

The design team presented many design concepts and various aesthetic options in early design phases. The option selected took its inspiration from the Bosque along the Rio Grande and the Los Rancho area. Using cottonwood trees and how they filter the light as an inspiration, Greer Stafford designed a shaded entry façade using steel columns and perforated metal panels. Construction has just commenced and is anticipated to be completed in Winter 2026.
