Teacherage Housing Subdivisions | Shiprock, New Mexico
Greer Stafford designed two separate housing subdivisions for Central Consolidated School District. The area lacks any available affordable housing for teachers and staff near school campuses. The new subdivisions offer an incentive for teacher relocation & retention in remote areas, meeting the District’s goal to attract teachers and have a place for them to live within the communities they work in.
The Mesa Housing subdivision is master planned for 32 homes near Mesa Elementary School. The housing project sets the standard for teacher housing for the State of New Mexico. According to New Mexico Public School Facilities Authority (PSFA), the District is taking the initiative to set the trend and become a model of teacher housing for the rest of New Mexico school districts. Phase One construction included utility infrastructure for entire subdivision and construction of 14 homes, with a community park. The subdivision offers two-bedroom or three-bedroom homes.
The Central Office Housing subdivision is master planned for a 28-home subdivision that is located near the District’s administration complex in Shiprock. Phase One construction mirrored that of the Mesa Housing subdivision – including utility infrastructure for entire subdivision and construction of 5 homes. Phase Two constructed an additional 4 homes. The Mesa Housing Subdivision home designs were utilized as prototypes to maintain equity between the two housing subdivisions.
