Painted Sky Elementary School | Albuquerque, New Mexico
Painted Sky Elementary School was designed to serve 800+ students on the expanding west side of Albuquerque.
Phase I consisted of a 25,000 square foot “core” building with administrative offices, kitchen, dining/multi-purpose room, library/media center, computer lab and three Kindergarten classrooms with separate “tot lot”.
Phase II construction provided 30 permanent classrooms in two wings, flanking the core facilities in a horseshoe shape that creates a protected exterior playground. The student courtyard was oriented to protect it from the dusty west winds as well as to provide a secure play area for the younger children. Shade structures are provided at critical locations to mitigate the heat gain in the building. The gymnasium is designed to be used after-hours by the surrounding community, while the classroom wings and core facilities are locked and secured. Exterior vehicular circulation was completed in this phase, physically separating the bus pick-up/drop-off zone from parent and visitor vehicular traffic.
